Global Pokemon: Diversity among Plush Pokemon Toys

Stoshi Tajiri, the legendary Japanese video game designer created the idea for an anime series called Pocket Monsters. This idea would evolve into today's Pokémon universe, which brings a world of animation to TV, video games, trading cards and, increasingly, to plush toys. You watch the animated TV show as Ash, the Pokemon Master, tries to catch Pokémon species, and follow along by collecting the characters as he finds them.

There are 493 species of Pokémon, which continue to evolve. Pikachu is the most well-known of the Pokémon species, with a prominent place in the anime series and a distinguishable yellow, cherubic appearance. Well Pikachu is the most visible of the characters, the other species have a rich tradition that can be categorized into generations. The first character introduced was Bulbasaur, along with 150 others in the Red and Blue Series. Additional generations produced Ruby and Sapphire, as well as Diamond and Pearl. Interestingly, Pokémon characters evolve from one another and can be grouped into families based on their origin, which makes collecting the plus toys interesting as you trace their roots back to the early characters.

Plush Pokémon are released as collectors items, most commonly in 6", 9" and 12" sizes, categorized by their family of origin. With the 10th anniversary of the series in 1998, special limited edition toys were released, which can be rare and valuable. You can also find limited edition sets of 3 or 6 toys which also have collector value.

The toys are released in collector's series, and currently you can find new Series 5 Pokémon plus toys for sale, with previous generations often featured in auctions and traded by collectors. The fifth series also introduces a new set of mini plush toys which are more affordable and provide a good way to get your collection started. Additionally, new deluxe 12" electronic figurines feature audible sound and music. Series 6 mini plush will be released in October, and will feature a whole new line of miniature figurine characters such as Yanma, Chimecho and Drifloon as well as new colors, poses and designs on existing toys such as Burmy and Staly.

The sixth series will also feature a new release of a mini Pikachu, which should prove to be a popular collector's toy this fall. Earlier series, especially the original first series, are great editions to any set and can be found on line at a number of stores. Series 3 toys can often be found discounted, and can also be a great way to pickup full-sized toys such as Bonsly at a lower price. Pay close attention to the quality and condition of the plush, as its best to purchase a new toy with tags in tact where possible.
